Is this C++ builders new FORUM ???

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Is this now the 'official' C++ builder forum?

What happened to the old one and the vast amount of information accumulated there?

There is no longer an OFFICIAL forum provided by Embarcadero for Delphi/C++Builder.  But, this is one of many UNOFFICIAL forums, yes.  See https://blogs.embarcadero.com/community/ for other sites that Embarcadero has provided links to.

What happened to the old one

The old old Delphi/C++Builder forums were migrated to Idera's community site awhile back ago, but just a couple of months ago Embarcadero shut down their forum on that site.  They have decided that they don't want to compete with 3rd party forums anymore.  They have had a long history of producing sub-par forum software, server failures/outages, etc, so they have finally given up trying to run their own forum.

and the vast amount of information accumulated there?

Gone for good, except for whatever may have been cached by 3rd party archiving sites.

Quite a bit can be found in the wayback machine.
I agree, though. It was a strange thing to do.

I guess they are really trying hard to shave off costs.

To shave off costs they had to pass housekeeping of official forum to volunteers. Also a product without good community will not be very popular and merchantable therefore.

Please note that we started with just a single sub-forum for the C++Builder guys because we had no idea how many there are and how many questions there would be.

We can divide up in more subforums if the usage dictates it.

The community is here.

 🙂.

But (IMHO) dropping of official forum was really wrong decision.

In old days (since ~2000 year) I usually started my day from browsing of official newsgroups (in good old plain text and very handy tree format of messages) and I still have a huge collection of answers in "how to ..." style from famous specialists like Peter Below, Remy, and many others. After end of NG civilization there is no default place where I can get help from gurus and be well informed. Yes, you can say that there are many such places but "many" means "scattered" in this context ...

I miss the old newsgroups 😢 None of the newer web-based forums have really matched up to them, in terms of usability, monitoring, organization.  It is just not the same.

I do too, and I don't... There were those that abused that usability to spam threads, simply because it was so easy to do so.

But yeah, the old newsgroups were underrated and should have survived and evolved.

Devastating.. just look at this "thread". Completely unorganized after just a few replies. Like a text message thread, but worse.

And wondering when this site is to be retired? Next week, a year?? There is no guarantee at all on a site like this, as I can see it.

Kind of ridiculous.. very sad.

I think the original subject line for this thread is one where this is quite understandable (and not a bad thing). There is a role for a forum where "rambling discussions" are accommodated.

If you look at many other threads here they are more "particular problem focused".

Mind you I am completely with everyone here, agreeing that Embarcadero made a disasterous decision when they chose to close down their forum. If you are looking at a new development system in this modern age one of the first things to check is how active is the community on the forum.....

As I've said before as well as losing community visibility and the huge volume of useful technical knowledge they also closed down a valuable source of customer feedback.

So "Kind of ridiculous... very sad.".

Wow.. That's too bad. Dropping 20 years(?) of discussions on the VCL etc. Some really great reads.

I spent quite a bit of time with Ann Lynnworth from https://www.codenewsfast.com and restored a full archive there. You can go find all the old messages there.

This is really great - one of the best news in a long time - can only be beaten by RAD Studio 11!?  🙂

I tested the archive briefly - seems to work.

I too have had a look : and yes it does seem to work and have a lot of the old stuff - so thanks to Jim for getting this running and pointing us to it.

I have spent ten minutes puzzling over the ordering of the "Latest Changes on this Web Site" items at the home page:

Code news fast home page

and would welcome anyone's guess on this !

Ideally I would like to set up a mirror of all the old posts that we host, but alas only so much time. If someone wants to work on a project like that I'm happy to try and support you in that effort.

No web-based forum has impressed me as much as XanaNews.

That said, I do not miss B.P.D.O-T!
