Android Virtual Keyboard Issue

One of my projects requires that I have the need to intercept a keydown event.

 

Unfortunitely ASCII keys on a virtual keyboard do not trigger a keydown event.  If you use a device with an attached keyboard (example Zebra barcode scanner) or Bluetooth keyboard the keydown event works fine.  Even when using Vysor (wireless or USB) plus computer keyboard it works. 

 

I have a Samsung tablet that I am testing.  Its default virtual keyboard doesn't work.  Also GBoard's virtual keyboard doesn't work either.

 

Suggestions or thoughts or solutions or is this a hopeless brick wall effort?
