    GetIt alternatives

An alternate package manager needs to be controlled and run by an organisation outside of Embarcadero which would give the community a little bit more leverage.
  2. Hi All Some changes with the IDE integration this week. I was unsatisfied with how the IDE plugin behaved when working with large project groups, because the Messages View doesn't show until the project group has loaded. When restoring the first time on a machine that didn't have the packages, this resulted in a potentially long period (depending on how many packages need to be installed/compiled) where no status info is available to what's going on, making it appear as though the IDE had hung. So I decided to use a window (not modal) to show the log view as the projects are loading and packages restoring. I created a custom LogMemo component to show this since I couldn't find one that suited - fortunately I already had some code to base it off (VSoft.VirtualListView). The log window will auto close after a few seconds if the restore/install/uninstall succeeds, you can configure that auto close time in the options. I also added options so you can control when the log view shows. Lastly, I added an option to not add DPM nodes to the project manager tree. On large project groups (the FinalBuilder project group has over 100 projects) it causes a long delay before the IDE is ready to use. This is because of how I had to hack into the IDE to add the nodes, the code is not at all efficient. When time permits I'll revisit this and see if I can find a better way. https://github.com/DelphiPackageManager/DPM/releases/tag/v0.1.63-alpha
  3. Hi All Small progress update on DPM - https://github.com/DelphiPackageManager/DPM - some tweaks to make it possible to use DPM with projects that use runtime packages. v0.1.54-alpha Release https://github.com/DelphiPackageManager/DPM/releases/tag/v0.1.54-alpha Package compilation will now build version info if the package dproj has it enabled. There doesn't appear to be a way to pass that info into msbuild, so I plan to look at updating the dproj file with the correct version info before compilation. Implemented Copy Local feature for runtime packages. For projects that use runtime packages, dpm packages that produce runtime packages will be copied to the output folder. Copy Local is still a little rough around the edges... it doesn't detect if the project actually references the bpl's - that's more difficult than it sounds due to differences between dcp and bpl filenames (libsufffix comes in play here). So for now, you may end up with extra bpl files in your output folder if you use runtime packages. Fixed project group support on install command. Improved handling of relative project file paths. Cleaned up logging. Added batch file for downloading dev dependencies (only needed for developing DPM).

  5. Hi All I have been steadily working away on my package manager project - the latest update includes compile on install support. https://github.com/DelphiPackageManager/DPM When a package is first installed, it is automatically compiled (if the package spec has that support enabled) and then the project references the compiled version of the package. This speeds up builds on your own projects, since you are not compiling the dpm package sources each time. As an extreme example of this, the DPM build process (building for 12 versions of delphi!) previously took 13 minutes on my build server, after installing the latest dpm and running 2 builds (the first one compiled the packages), the build time is down to 2 minutes! Much of that speed up comes from the fact that older versions of delphi are quite slow at building Spring4D. I encourage everyone to check it out and provide feedback where possible. To get started using DPM, download the latest release from here : You will need to configure a package feed (folder) and download some packages - see the Getting started page Most of my open source projects have package files available under the releases tab on github - https://github.com/vsoftTechnologies/ I have also added a mirror project for Spring4D on github so that I could publish packages (bitbucket doesn't support that) - https://github.com/VSoftTechnologies/Spring4DMirror Same for JsonDataObjects - Andreas ignored my pull request for over a year so I closed it and just forked the project - https://github.com/VSoftTechnologies/JsonDataObjects I'm still working on getting design time packages loaded.. need to get proper project group support going first. DPM Package Manager - presentation

Hi All A few weeks ago I did a zoom presentation about DPM to the Australian Delphi User Group (Melbourne branch, but anyone could attend). A link to the recording of that presentation is available on the ADUG website - https://www.adug.org.au/meetings/melbourne-meeting-november-2020/ along with some notes about dpm The video is nearly 2hrs long, but the presentation part is only the first 50 min or so (the rest is q&a/discussion). If you want to skip past the boring slides to the demo it starts at 24:40 😉
  7. Hi All For those who are interested, I have made some progress on this project, and have uploaded an installer with the command line tool and IDE plugins for XE2-10.4 - it's still very much an alpha version (not feature complete or stable) but at least shows the direction I'm heading in. I have added some quick notes on how to get started with dpm https://github.com/DelphiPackageManager/DPM/blob/master/GettingStarted.md The installer can be found here https://github.com/DelphiPackageManager/DPM The IDE plugin is still a bit rough around the edges but reasonably stable. Note that installing design time packages is still being worked on. Most of my open source projects have package binaries under the releases tab (the getting started notes show what to do with them). It's still some way from being ready for production use, we are still working on a website/package repository. If you are a library author, please do take a look. Creating packages is not at all difficult.
