Quote

What could be a nice extension of the component palette would be if you created three tabs on the palette.

  • Put the current palette on the first tab
  • Put a MFU/MRU grid of component icons on the second tab
(MFU = most frequently used, MRU = /most recently used)
  • Put a grid of manually selected component icons on the third tab

It is possible that tab two and three can be combined, f.x. if you can pin a component's position (drag, right click, pin/unpin).

To enable muscle memory support, you could use a two character code for each grid element, starting at 00, and ending at ZZ

UI for adding/removing - First Tab, right click, add to Favorites, Second/Third tab - right click, Remove.

Layouts need to remember the tab selected at save point.

Apart from making the tabs inside the palette, it could also be an approach to have one or two new tool windows with the desired behavior. This would allow to dock these windows into a tabbed dock, achieving nearly the same as you describe, or set up an individual docking layout with the palette and the new window(s) being visible side by side.

This could as well be realized by a 3rd-party IDE plugin bringing this functionality even to existing Delphi versions.
