JCL installation problems in D10.4.2

Hello,

when trying to install JCL (V2.8 build 5677) into D10.4.2 I get this failure message soon after it starts compiling Win32 stuff:

"This installation of RAD Studio 10.4 doesn't support dual packages."

Same problem here... I just download latest JCL from github to upgrade it.

 

Win32 goes fine but when the installer starts to compile win64 I got this:

I just can't realize what's the need in 3rd party installers when there's straightforward install process from IDE.

That implies that there is nothing more than some code to compile - fwiw this does not even add the dcu output directory to the library path (which is my biggest issue with that "process") let alone all the other stuff the jcl/jvcl installer might do (I am no jedi dev, so I don't know how much of that is actually necessary).

Well, I'm not a fan of components doing tons of things before they are able to install (frequently they even unconditionally install themselves to paths THEY like). Adding DCU's to libpath - yes, that's a drawback but not a big one.

You can use the IDE's "process" for the JCL and JVCL but then you have to

  1. Build 4 JCL runtime packages and add their source path, library path and resource path (*.obj) to the IDE's settings
  2. Repeat step 1. for Win64
  3. Build and install up to 10 JCL Designtime package (the IDE plugins/experts)
  4. Build 28 JVCL runtime package and add their source path, library path and resource path (*.obj) to the IDE's settings
  5. Repeat step 4. for Win64
  6. Build and install 28 designtime package
  7. Repeat all steps for each installed Delphi version and skip the Win64 step if a Delphi version doesn't support it.

 

And that is for one person. If you are in a team and have only one Delphi version installed then the multiplier is the size of your team.

 

UPDATE: And not to forget. You need to compile the packages in the correct order because they depend on each other.

I'm really not a fan of installers like this either.. and especially not a fan of code that a bunch of different modes/ifdefs that change it's behaviour. I would imagine that would be a nightmare for support - having to first work out how it was installed (with the correct options) before trying to reproduce issues. 

 

Jcl/Jvcl has always been too complicated - there are some real gems in there but I tend to avoid them because if you use one unit it pulls in 50 more - delphi being delphi, not everything is optimised away. Granted it's been many years since I last looked at it.. but just looking at that installer is enough make me avoid it.

This is something I'm working to improve with my package manager project. I would just say I want to install Jcl and it would work that out and install the dependencies etc in the correct order.

I don't want the DCU directory of any 3rd party component/library in my IDE's library path. In my opinion it belongs into the individual project's search path, if that project uses the library. Actually, I prefer to have the source code in the projects path rather than the DCUs.

There's a feature called - wait for it - PROJECT GROUPS! that could solve almost all of these steps.

That's a matter of taste.

Pity IDE doesn't have "Absolute Base" config that all other platform configs inherit from. Having to add lib paths for every platform is very irritating

Short answer is don't mix vcl and fmx.    I only have DX pro how's it making C++:classic_ohmy:

Click on half a million design packages and select "install". That's the most annoying part because the design packages are intermingled with the run time packages so I'd need to click on every second one.

There is a simple solution for this problem. Reorder the packages in the group, move the design time packages to the bottom.

Yes, I could do that, and the next time I update the package group from Github, I'd have to do that all over again.

 

My point is: There is no simple solution built into the IDE.
