v13 has not been released yet, and no information about its pricing is available at this time.

If you buy a RAD Studio license, you get a subscription to all major and "minor" updates during your subscription period. Contact the sales team or just check your license to see if your subscription is enabled.

If you let your subscription lapse then they charge you full price for a new license because they are unscrupulous and hate their customers

That's not quite true. They will usually allow you to continue your subscription if it run out not too long ago. But of course starting with the date it run out.

Also, there are some special offers from time to time, where you can save part of the price for a new license. But for a while keeping the subscription active has been the cheapest way to update (if you can call that "cheap"). And every time you have to remove "platinum support" from the order.

The one thing that has annoyed me the most, is that you need an active subscription to even download an install bugfixes.

Given that they never fix bugs in anything other than the very latest release, it's not that big a loss!

What I do: I make a copy of the "what's new in Delphi xyz" document, then I delete from it things that I am not interested in. If the list remains big enough OR if there is a feature that I really really need then I consider upgrading.

Doing that you don't obtain fixes for "old" features neither optimizations (and sometimes new bugs depending on what you use).

"What's New" is just the tip of the iceberg. Be sure to also read the list of closed tickets in each version (even if you only scan the list quickly without looking at the details).

The VCL is generally stable, but for FireMonkey, it is strongly recommended that you update to comply with the requirements imposed by Google/Android, Apple, and Microsoft. That's why the subscription (with a lower price) exists on top of the license.

With each new edition you have a higher and higher number of features. They are never* removed.

But for bugs, math always stays on zero: TheNumberOfBugsFixed - NewIntroducedBugs = 0.

🙂

* They just removed major features in this latest version.

I don't know if that was an attempt at humour, I assume not as there was no winky face.
A number of times significant features have been removed and when you could view the issue stats you could see that the reported outstanding bug count grew over time.  At a hugely faster rate than fixes, I presume it still does since minimal number of bugs compared to what's reported seem to be fixed.

It was humor sarcasm.

That why I put the star after "never". It is like "finger crossed so does not apply to me" or like in those ads where they say "in our restaurant you can eat all* you can".

Darian got it 🙂

I wish for the version where Emba concentrates on repairing bug. One single version would be enough. It would make lots of people happy.
On the other hand I understand them. It is a big product with lots of features and customers keep asking for new features. They are also FORCED to be up to date with Android an Mac...
After Borland crashed (with some heavenly help from M$) Embarcadero took over. So, we are lucky that happen.

As I said before I am not mad at the issues in the RTL/VCL. Those I can fix myself. I am annoyed at the IDE. I don't have the source code for that, so I cannot fix it.

I wish dot-releases were purely bug fixes; new features should be reserved for major upgrade versions, IMHO. It just seems weird to point to features as being introduced in 12.2, for instance, nicer to just say version 12 did this or version 13 added that. It complicates the issue further to have to know which dot-release the CE version is hooked to. So, for example, WebStencils was introduced in one of the 12.x releases, so when a user says they have CE and it's version 12, not only do you have to know that CE is hooked to 12.1 but also WebStencils wasn't released until 12.2. So even though they have CE (12) they don't have WebStencils. Just too messy.

OK, that was a bit off topic, I suppose.
