12.3 or 13/14 as next?

Recommended Posts

Anyone knows if EMB plans are for 12.3 maintenance bug fixing focused release or we wait for 13 (or skip unlucky no.) and go to 14.

It's a shame that there is no roadmap  like it was for the last decade and more.

No mention of a 12.3, however in a webinar (I think the one for 12.2) they said 13 would not be skipped.

Too bad, every buggy major  release like 12 undoubtley is should have final bug fixing minor or at least big patch, including final patched totally ISO closing release.

Like Version 11 have such all in one iso  build which does not require to install later any patches.

There is .iso for 12.2.1.

I personally think it's strange to introduce major features in minor releases and fix minor bugs in major releases. I think major releases (11, 12, etc) should get new features, minor releases (11.1, 11.2, 12.1, 12.2, etc) should be mostly focused on fixing minor problems and bugs.

I guess people don't want to wait for new features but then what's the point of a major versus minor release?

Anyone who would have such info would be under an NDA not to discuss it until Embarcadero announced it publicly first.

During the 2/14 Delphi 30th Anniversary webinar, I recall Ian did barely mention a 12.3 was coming, so I would guess that will be the next release.

I like the IDE the way it is.  I hope they did not change it to something completely different.

For example, I like the way you can scroll via cursor up/down keys and not have the caret pinned to the end of the line.

There is 0.01% chance of that happening. There are still many parts of today's IDE similar to Delphi 1 from 30 years ago and even Borland Pascal before that. Some of the same hot keys and many of the sub-windows in the IDE. There are often additions and incremental changes and subtle (and not so subtle) ways of interacting but there's just too much that would need to be re-tested if they made a huge interface change. The Welcome Page has been where the bulk of the "pull the rug out from under you" changes have taken place and that's not a critical part of the daily programming task.

Isn't that an editor option? Cursor beyond EOL?

Edit: No. There is no "Cursor beyond EOL". There is only "Cursor beyond EOF", which is different.

Don't be afraid of IDE changes if anything happen in 12.3. Marco spoiled a little at the end of the birthday webinar. Just read between lines and don't forgot that no roadmap is public. Nothing is sure until an official announce. You can simply wait for Mars 13th webinar.

A feature request I would love to see happen is the ability to add a comment to the Open Recent section on the welcome page.  And a create/modify date.

I would like to be able to add/change a comment for each of the entries so that I know more details about a project I may have forgotten about.  Every time I open a project in XE7, I just keep wishing there was such a feature.  And let it be customizable in options or something, like you can do in Explorer where you right-click the labels bar and a drop-down of selections appear to customize the viewing layout.

Not sure we have an access to previous opened projects in the Open Tools API , but you can create an extension for the Welcome page if you want. You have a sample in the RAD Studio samples folder.

What!?

My favorite IDE is finally catching up to the current decade? Color me mildly intrigued. It's a 64-bit IDE, the worst-kept secret since someone figured out Clark Kent was Superman.

I doubt that 64 bit version of the IDE is going to be available in a minor release. We can only hope. IBM is also catching up and deprecates the 32 bit drivers for Informix, I do need a 64 bit IDE.

(The source code for application is prepared to be compiled as a 64 bit due to poor debugging we did not made the change yet. On the other hand I am a bit afraid as users are going to load 3-4GB data from the database)

Have you seen the IDE using a phone booth recently?
